The 2019 Doctoral Forum on Mechanics held at Peking University

  • From September 20th to 22nd, 2019, the "2019 Doctoral Forum on Mechanics" was held at Peking University. The forum was jointly organized by the Department of Mechanics and Engineering Sciences in the College of Engineering at Peking University, the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology, and the Chinese Society of Mechanics.

The forum consisted of four invited reports, fourteen theme reports, and plenty of session reports in its five parallel sessions. Receiving 203 report submissions from 51 universities in China, 112 were selected as session reports, after reviewed by the program committee.

The forum aims to show the latest research progress and achievements from doctoral students in the frontiers of mechanics, and enhance the academic exchanges among doctoral students.

The opening ceremony in Yingjie Exchange Center, hosted by Prof. Huiling Duan, associate dean of the College of Engineering

Prof. Shiyi Chen, President of Southern University of Science and Technology, and Prof. Ru Huang, Assistant to President of Peking University spoke in the ceremony

Following the opening ceremony were four invited reports- Academician Xiaojing Zheng’s ‘Multi-scale phenomena in the high Reynolds number turbulence’, Academician Weimin Bao’s ‘Space technology development and mechanical problems faced’, Academician Jiachun Li’s ‘For the Mechanics Research in Future’ and Academician Dongxiao Zhang’s ‘Data Driven vs. Model Driven Seepage Mechanics Research".

After the invited reports, the teachers and students raised many questions and actively communicated with the academicians.

In the sub-forums on the afternoon of the 21st and on the 22nd, the academic reports and exchanges were held. The reports covered the fields of mechanics such as solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, engineering mechanics, general mechanics, mechanical systems and control, biomechanics, explosion mechanics, and aerospace engineering.

The specific reports and intensive discussions and exchanges brought a sharp collision of knowledge and thought, and also provided inspiration for the participants' scientific research work. 25 reports of doctoral students were selected as “excellent reports”.
