Dr. Jennifer Lippincott-Schwartz visits the College of Engineering and gives a lecture

  • Invited by the Biomedical Department of the College of Engineering, biologist Jennifer Lippincott-Schwartz, member of the National Academy of Sciences as well as the School of Medicine, US paid a visit to Peking University from August 7 to August 9.

On August 8, Dr. Lippincott-Schwartz gave a lecture to about 300 students and teachers and the community of scholars at the university gymnasium. She talked about new optical microscopy in cell biology and new optical microscopy in autophagy and apoptosis research applications.

Prof. Antony K. Chen of the Biomedical Department hosted the lecture.

Dr. Lippincott-Schwartz's report was divided into two parts, which lasted two hours.

In the first hour, Dr. Lippincott-Schwartz cited her rich theoretical and practical experience to introduce the audience the development and applications of a new type optical microscopy technology in cell biology. By using super-resolution imaging technique in living cells, the structure of subcellular organelles (such as ER, Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, lysosomes, peroxisomes and lipid droplets) can be disclosed, and molecule’s transport and function information in different organelles can be provided, which greatly enriched the audience’s understanding and awareness in super resolution microscopy and molecular dynamic behavior in cells and cell physiology.

During the second hour, Dr. Lippincott-Schwartz demonstrated her laboratory’s latest research progress in using a new microscopy technique to study cell autophagy and apoptosis, and the relationship between lipid droplets and cell aging.
