    Composite Simulation based on Multiscale Analysis

  • Three parts will be presented in this talk. At Part One, a theoretical framework of multiscale analysis is established to analyze the linear and nonlinear behavior of heterogeneous materials. The method consists of three key ingredients: 1. mathematical homogenization; 2. eigenstrain-based model reduction; and 3. recursive formulation of N-scale analysis. At Part Two, the corresponding industrial simulation product – Multiscale Designer is introduced. Practical workflow of multiscale material model development and simulation is presented for both the continuous product form (unidirectional long fiber) and the chopped product form (chopped short fiber). At Part Three, several key aspects of commercial software development are pointed out followed by an open discussion of possible paths for transferring an in-house code to a commercial software package.
  • Biography
  • Mr. Zheng Yuan received his B.S. and M.S. degree from Tsinghua University in 2000 and 2003, and his Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2008. He was co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Multiscale Design Systems (MDS), LLC from 2010 to 2015. During that period, he was the principal investigator of several small business innovation research (SBIR) and small business technology transfer (STTR) programs funded by US government. Along with Altair Engineering Inc. acquisition of MDS in 2015, Mr. Yuan leads the multiscale development team as Senior Scientist and Manager even since. Dr. Yuan is also an editorial board member of International Journal for Multiscale Computational Engineering.
