Research Areas

Trans-scale mechanics of solids, Theoretical, experimental and size effect studies of materials at micro- and nano scale, Thin film delamination mechanisms at micro- and nano-scale thickness of films, Applications of discrete dislocation method to micromechanics analysis, Inverse problems concerning on microscale, Strain gradient plasticity and applications, Elastic-plastic fracture of solids, Elastic-plastic instability of solid material and structures, etc.

Research Profile

For more than 20 years, Dr. Yueguang Wei developed the trans-scale mechanics theory and trans-scale mechanics method, and he applied the theory and methods to the characterizations of strength, toughness and failure of the advanced materials. The developed trans-scale theory and methods include: the trans-scale mechanics theory considering both strain gradient effects and surface/interface effects ("top down" theory); Finite element method which is suitable for strain gradient theory; Characterizations of mechanical properties from both atomic calculations and experimental observations and measurements of micro-structure evolutions ("bottom up" approach); Development of linkage law from "bottom up" to "top down" theory, and so on. In recent years, Dr. Yueguang Wei systematically used the above theory and method to describe the thin film delamination, the failures of thermal barrier coating system, the property characterizations of nanostructured materials, the failure of cementation system, as well as micro-scale friction and other issues.
