On June 29th, College of Engineering (COE) grandly hosted a commencement ceremony for Class of 2017 graduates in Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center at Peking University.
COE leaders, department chairs, teachers, along with parents and families of some graduates attended the event to share with the graduates this joyous moment, and to send their congratulations and best wishes. The event was hosted by Ms. Jing Zhang, Vice Party Secretary of COE.
Ms. Jing Zhang hosts the ceremony
A short video prior to the official start interviewed the graduate students on questions like “what was the happiest moment to you?” “what was your biggest regret?” and “what do you want to say to the College of Engineering?” The video also interviewed some COE teachers, including Prof. Shaoqiang Tang, Xiaowei Zhan, Haifeng Chen, Zhili Sun, Wanru Song, who sent goodbye words and best wishes to the graduates.
Dean Dongxiao Zhang gives a congratulating speech
At the ceremony, Dean Dongxiao Zhang gave a congratulating speech. He shared his own experiences during his undergraduate studies, overseas graduate studies and the research career afterwards, and gave the graduates some suggestions. He asked them to build a good foundation of knowledge system, improve research capabilities, make positive attempts with a curious mind, not easily succumb to difficulties, have independent thinking and be innovative.
Alumnus Yuanhao Huang delivers a speech
Alumnus 98’ Mr. Yuanhao Huang, currently Board of Chairman of Orbbec Co., Ltd. delivered a speech on the ceremony. He suggested the graduates on finding out development direction by increasing experiences, communicating with people and looking for role models. He asked the graduates to be focused on their goals and making solid steps.
Teacher Shaojun Guo gives a speech
Subsequently, teacher representative Dr. Shaojun Guo asked the graduates to enjoy their studies, work and daily life, to work hard, be self-motivated and have dreams. Student representatives Haoyu Tang and Guizhi Zhu and parents representative Ms. Ying Li also shared their feelings.
There were altogether 276 graduates this year, including 77 Bachelor Degrees obtainers, 116 Master Degrees obtainers and 83 Ph.D. graduates. According to the overall performances during the years at university, several students were elected to be outstanding undergraduates and outstanding graduates. They received the honor from the COE Associate Deans Jianxiang Wang, Feng Chen, and Assistant Dean Yongmei Li on the ceremony.
Before the ceremony came to an end, each of the graduates received "turning the tassel" from COE leaders on the ceremony, which symbolizes one's transition from candidate to graduate.
