On February 18-19, the Academic Seminar for faculty members of the College of Engineering (COE), Peking University and the School of Engineering (SENG), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was successfully held in HKUST. The two sides communicated on three topics - Advanced Materials, Bioengineering and Bioinformatics, Fluid dynamics and Aeronautics. Besides, they also discussed issues about postgraduate education, exchanges and cooperation.
The delegation of COE includes Professor Steven Feng Chen, Associate Dean, Prof. Huiling Duan, Director of the Department of Mechanics and Engineering Sciences, Professor Anyuan Cao, Director of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and a dozen of teachers from COE’s six departments.
Professor Wei SHYY, Executive Vice-President and Provost of HKUST, Prof Tim CHENG, Dean of SENG, Prof. Tongxi YU, Senior Consultant and former Vice Dean of SENG, and Professor Ping GAO of SENG warmly received the delegation.
At the opening ceremony, Professor Tim Cheng delivered a welcoming speech on the situation of HKUST and its work in faculty team building, education and international exchange. Professor Tongxi Yu, as an alumnus of COE, introduced the historical origins of the exchanges between the two universities and the advantages and complementarity between the two sides. Subsequently, Prof. Steven Chen delivered an opening speech to express gratitude to HKUST for organizing this seminar. He hoped that this seminar will enhance mutual understanding and lay the foundation for further cooperation.
The seminar had a total of three directions and four sub-venues, where faculty members from both institutions gave more than 30 wonderful exchange lectures. The delegation also visited many SENG laboratories, and discussed research areas of common interests.
During SENG’s visit to COE in May, 2016, deans of the two institutions advocated the young faculty members of the two sides to carry out exchanges and cooperation in scientific research, teaching and other aspects, and got positive responses. The two sides appointed Prof. Ping Gao of SENG and Prof. Huiling Duan of COE to be the person in charge for the respective sides. The two sides will hold visits and talks on irregular terms to strengthen the communication and exchange of young teachers.
The School of Engineering (SENG) is the largest of the five Schools within the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). It enrolls almost 40% of the University's student body, with over 3,200 undergraduates and more than 2,000 postgraduates. About 30% of the University's faculty members are in SENG.
