On October 21, Prof. Fotis Sotiropoulos, Dean of College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Stony Brook University paid a visit to the College of Engineering to seek exchange and collaboration possibilities.
He was warmly received by Prof. Dongxiao Zhang, Dean of the College of Engineering, Peking University, and Ms. Yongmei Li, Assistant Dean.
Dean Zhang made an introduction to the college in terms of history, vision and mission, departments, student makeup, faculty recruitment and international cooperation. He particularly introduced about the Globex (Global Educational Exchange) Program, which is designed to provide students from overseas partner universities with a study-abroad experience by allowing them to take 1-2 full length courses for about 3 weeks in July at Peking University and getting university credits. This year, a total of 14 instructors and 396 students from 38 universities of 8 countries participated in the program, marking a new high in the program’s history since 2012.
Dean Sotiropoulos introduced that College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University aims to provide students with a solid foundation that prepares them to adapt to technological change throughout their careers. Hands-on laboratory courses, the undergraduate internship program, and the senior design project provide practical experience in engineering that complements theoretical training. Its departments include Applied Mathematics & Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Materials Science & Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Technology & Society.
After discussion, both institutes agreed that they have many things in common such as seeking cooperation and exchanges in student education and research, and the Globex program should be a good project to begin with.
