The Peking University (PKU) Robot Competition Team, namely, the sharPKUngfu team, participated in the 2014 International Underwater Robot Competition recently held in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province, winning one championship and one first prize.
The competition, taking Intelligent Biomimetic Robotic Fish as the theme, attracted over 300 participants from 54 universities from China, Netherland, Australia, Korea and UK. It challenged the robots in various games, including racing, synchronized swimming, rescue and water polo.
The sharPKUngfu team, guided by Professor Guangming Xie of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, College of Engineering, composed of over ten undergraduates, master students and Ph.D. candidates of the college. With sufficient preparation, numerous testing, and a fierce two-day competition, they finally won a championship and a first prize.
The sharPKUngfu Team was established in 2004, comprising of teachers and students of the Intelligent Control Lab (ICL) directed by Professor Long Wang. ICL has been committed to the research of intelligent biomimetic robot, multi-robot system and collaboration. It has successfully developed the bionic robot fish, bionic robot dolphin, and biped robot, and has been granted a number of national invention patents.
The team started participating in robot competition in 2005. From 2006, they have kept an incredible record of winning at least one championship each year.
The team leader and the team members have been interviewed by several state media including CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, China Education Television, Central People's Broadcasting Station, and Guangming Daily.
