The SharPKUngfu Team of Peking University (PKU) attended the 14th China Robot Competition and RoboCup China Open and won the championship in the water polo competition.
The China Robot Competition and RoboCup China Open are the most influential and authoritative robotics competition, as well as an academic conference and exhibition for new robotic technology in China. The event, held from October 18-20 in Hefei, the capital city of Anhui Province, challenged the participants in many categories of competition such as soccer, water polo, first aid and household service.
In this competition, there were 2400 teams from 206 national universities and institutes, including PKU, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The number of participants reached a new high in history.
The SharPKUngfu team, led by Professor Guangming Xie of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, College of Engineering, compose of over ten students of undergraduates, master students and Ph.D. candidates. With sufficient preparation, numerous testing, and a fierce two-day competition, they finally won the championship in the water polo competition.
The SharPKUngfu Team was established in 2004, comprising of teachers and students of the Intelligent Control Lab (ICL) directed by Professor Xie. ICL has been committed to the research of multi-agent collaboration, networked systems, and intelligent bionic robots for a long time. It has successfully developed the bionic robot fish, bionic robot dolphin, and biped robot, and has applied for a number of national invention patents.
The team started participating in the competition in 2005. From 2006, they have kept an incredible record of winning at least one championship each year.
In recent years, the team has been interviewed by several state media including CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, China Education Television, Central People's Broadcasting Station, and Guangming Daily.
