Initiated by the Office of International Relations, College of Engineering (COE), the Globex Summer Program for 2013 took place at Peking University. It aims to become an excellent platform for learning, communication, and interaction involving dozens of students and faculty from 11 world-renowned universities.
The program, lasting from July 1st to July 31st, has 50 students coming from different countries and a diverse pool of schools, including University of Delaware (USA), University of Maryland (USA), University of Iowa (USA), University of Pittsburgh (USA), University of Toronto (Canada), University of New South Wales (Australia), Institute of Fluid Mechanics (France), CONICYT (Chile), Yokohama National University (Japan), the Chinese University of HK (Hong Kong), and PKU (China).
They will attend 1-2 of the seven program courses covering the fields of Biomechanics, hydraulics, manufacturing engineering and solar energy etc., given by multiple professors from the participating universities. The credits they earned will be recognized by their own schools.
The seven courses are 1)Biomaterials and Biocompatibility, delivered by Tracy Cui, department of Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh, 2) Computational Two-Phase Flows, lectured by Eric Climent, Dept. of Fluids Mechanics, INP-ENSEEIHT/IMFT, 3) Manufacturing Engineering, by Michael Munro, Mech and Ind Eng Dept., University of Toronto, 4) Mechanics of Solids, delivered by Shaker A. Meguid, also Mech and Ind Eng Dept., University of Toronto, 5) Musculoskeletal Tissues Regeneration & Biomechanics, lectured by Arthur Mak and Liming Bian, Dept. of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, the Chinese University of HongKong, 6) Numerical Methods in Hydraulics and Hydrology, by Prabhakar Clement, Civil Engineering, Aubern University and Chunmiao Zheng, Center for Water Research, PKU, and 7) Photovoltaics: Solar Energy, by Raymond, Adomaitis, Dept. of Bioengineering, University of Maryland.
Starting from 2012, the Globex program constitutes an initiative for semester-long student educational exchange between the College of Engineering at Peking University and a foreign College of Engineering. Three forms have been scheduled: Globex Summer, Globex Spring and Globex Fall. The number of participating schools has been on the rise.
Last summer, over 20 students from Peking University, Tsinghua University, University of Delaware, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Yokohama National University, and 4 Chile Universities attended Globex Summer at PKU. In the Spring of this year, three COE students Yimin Liu, Jianzhou Lu and Ren Yang spent one semester at the University of Delaware participating in the Globex Spring program.
