    Ph.D. candidate Yu Liu wins 2nd place in QNDE 2011

  • The College of Engineering Ph.D. student Yu Liu won second place in The Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation (QNDE) 2011, held at the University of Vermont from July 17-22.

    The annual QNDE conference is a premier international NDE meeting designed as an interface between research and early engineering for the presentation of ideas and results to transfer to engineering development. Scholars in this field around the globe attend the conference and present their research results.. To provide more opportunities for discussion and academic exchange, the conference highly values poster presentation and sets up a separate competition area for the students besides a general display zone.

    The student poster competition is one of the highlights of every QNDE conference. The contestants post their work for an anonymous judging panel the day before the competition, present them to the scholars and answer various questions on the competition day. The judging panel members, unknown to the contestants, are among the scholars. The panel rates the contestants according to criteria including board design, work innovation level, and contestants’ understanding of their work.

    QNDE 2011 is sponsored by QNDE Programs and organized by the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation at Iowa State University in cooperation with the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Army Research Laboratory, the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-LaRC, and the National Science Foundation.

    Twenty-one contestants from world-renowned universities and institutes attended this year’s student competition.  

    Yu Liu majors in solid mechanics in the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering under the supervision of Professor Zheng Li.
