Established in 2005, the Department of Biomedical Engineering is one of the fundamental departments of the College of Engineering. The BME department is committed to cutting-edge life science and medical research in the context of engineering technology. It has also established a graduate education system that has led to significant progress in biomedical engineering research.
Since the very beginning, the BME department has boasted of its strong academic research. It has undertaken many international, national, and regional research projects, such as with the National Key Basic Research Program (973), the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863), the National Natural Science Foundation Program, and a large number of international cooperation projects.
Currently, the BME department has a vibrant team of young researchers, including four full professors, four associate professors, and six distinguished research professors. With international education backgrounds, all of them are actively engaged in the forefront of research and education.
The department has built very strong ties with some of the world’s best universities, such as Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University. In particular, it collaborated with Georgia Tech and Emory University to set up the first joint Ph.D. program approved by the Office of Degree, State Council of China.
The undergraduate program opened in 2010 with an emphasis of “Strengthening the foundation, Attention to quality, and Pursuit of Innovation.” The department is dedicated to helping its students become interdisciplinary talents and leaders with a solid theoretical foundation and expansive expertise, great integration capabilities, and a strong innovative sense.
It is also committed to encouraging its graduate students. For students from different disciplines, the BME department has established a series of graduate courses including: Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematical Basis of the Biological Basis of Biomedical Engineering, Biosensors and Biomedical Instrumentation, Bio-modeling and Simulation of Medical Systems, Biomedical Materials, Nano/ micro and Single-molecule Technology, Bio-mechanics (solid, fluid and cell mechanics), Laser Medicine, Magnetic Resonance Theory, and The Principle of Sequencing.
