Solar energy is the most abundant, renewable and clean energy source. Its strategic importance has been recognized by many countries in their energy portfolios. Chinese President Hu Jintao has announced a goal of having renewable energy resources make up 15% of total primary energy consumption for China by 2020, pushing for solar energy to play an increasingly important role.
Despite being the largest solar photovoltaic module manufacturing country, China has yet to develop its own competitive core solar technologies and cultivate a mature domestic market. For this reason, the College of Engineering established the Center of Solar Energy (COSE) in 2010 with a vision to help China become a first-tier solar country in areas from technical development, talent training, and market adoption.
